Zohar Karny

Choreographer, dancer, performer and movement director based in Tel Aviv.

First Prize Winner of the prestigious Gertrud Krause Foundation for Choreography and holds a master’s degree in dance from The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. Zohar has created works for the Jerusalem Academy Dance Ensemble and collaborated as a movement director with the renowned Ruth Kanner Theater Group. Her artistic projects span diverse disciplines, including vocal production, video art, and theater. While her latest creations vary greatly, they consistently explore the intricate connections between body, mind, and rhythm, as well as the cultural and symbolic dimensions of “groove” across traditional and contemporary dance forms. Music plays a central role in Zohar’s work, serving not only as a traditional bridge between dance and movement but also as a mechanism for theatrical storytelling. Her musicological research investigates the social and cultural meanings embedded in sound and rhythm, enriching her creations with layered artistic expression.

Zohar began her significant journey as a dance artist in 2004 when she studied at the Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts in Tel Aviv, majoring in dance. Zohar trained professionally in the field of Western dance, focusing on classical Ballet and Modern dance. Over the years, Zohar was exposed to dance and music from West Africa and the Caribbean, which became an integral part of the repertoire of styles in which Zohar specialized. Instead of following the traditional path of joining dance companies or professional training programs, Zohar chose to develop her artistic practice independently while simultaneously enriching herself with academic studies in other fields. In 2016, Zohar completed a bachelor's degree in Sociology and Anthropology, alongside the program in African Studies at Tel Aviv University. Later, Zohar continued her studies with a master's degree at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.

Zohar's works have been showcased at prestigious festivals and venues, including the Suzanne Dellal Center, Tel Aviv Cinematheque, Tmuna Theater, Inbal Dance Theater (TLV), MASH House (JLM), Ruth Kanner Theater, Intimadance Festival, International JLM Showcase, and the Between Heaven & Earth Festival.
